Thank you very much for this article! Excellent advice expressed in a way I can truly understand and relate to.
I have tried a hundred times to set boundaries and tried to stand up to my husband but it’s really hard. He’s my boss in our family business and I manage the busy office. He leads an hour-long conversation every morning to test me and my work piles up, but I believe he does it to find out how I feel about him and it’s like an interrogation. He reads me like a book.
Standing up to him is like trying to walk against a gale force wind.
He embarrasses me in front of his brothers and harps on my mistakes, and this has GOT to stop. I’m not perfect, but he has no right to continually shine a spotlight on my mistakes.

My ex wife is a big master manipulator, then my son now 20, now my daughter of 15…
They all following the same path.

Having a defeatist attitude is one thing. But being unrealistically positive is another. Everybody can’t do everything. If somebody hasn’t even tried, that’s one thing. But there are some times where someone won’t succeed, regardless of how hard they try. Tell some horribly ugly girl she has a defeatist attitude because she doesn’t think she’ll get a job as a supermodel. Regardless of the attitude she has, they’re never going to hire her when they can hire a girl with spectacular looks. Even an average-looking girl could have that problem. After first graduating college long ago, I had average grades and no work experience. I went to a job fair where they had people with many years of job experience and really high grades. When I told my sister they’d never hire someone like me when they could hire someone like that, she said I had a defeatist attitude. I tried to tell her it was a realistic attitude, not a defeatist one. Get your heads out of the clouds!

Of course there are cases where someone DOES have a defeatist attitude. Someone might have the ability to succeed but thinks they won’t, and doesn’t even try. That’s another matter.

After reading this article, I am much more aware that the man I’m so deeply in love with is an emotional abuser. When he acts out or says things that are manipulative red flags go up (but I never knew why), and my response is usually silent when his emotional behavior is like a “dark hole.” But everything else I respond with agitation in my voice or mannerisms. But now with this information, I will begin something new. I will call him on it, “It seems like your emotionally manipulating me by directing fault on me when you were at fault or caused the disagreement.” That’s an example. I can do this! (I hope). At this time I will make a boundary, “I am aware there is emotional manipulation here that has become part of our dynamics and it is unhealthy. From now on when I see or hear it I will point it out.”

In reply to Tanya D. Once a user, always a user. What is in it for me? They do things if there is something in it for them. You want dinner? Sure they will take you but it will be the restaurant of their choice. You can test this out and see that they always have to have it their way. They hate sharing and they hate to see you improve yourself.
